France Moves to Linux in Push for Digital Independence from U.S. Tech:

France is taking steps to reduce its reliance on American technology by transitioning some government systems away from Microsoft Windows to the open-source platform Linux. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s control over its digital infrastructure and data. French minister David Amiel emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to “regain control of our digital destiny,” highlighting concerns about dependence on foreign tech providers.

While officials have not outlined a detailed timeline or specified which Linux distributions will be adopted, the transition is set to begin within DINUM, the government’s digital agency. The shift reflects a growing focus on digital sovereignty—prioritizing locally developed technologies and reducing reliance on external vendors.

This decision follows a series of similar moves by France. Recently, the government replaced Microsoft Teams with a domestically developed alternative called Visio, which is built on the open-source platform Jitsi. Additionally, plans are underway to migrate the country’s health data systems to a more secure, locally controlled platform.

The push comes amid broader concerns across Europe about overdependence on U.S. technology companies. Policymakers are increasingly evaluating risks tied to foreign control over critical digital services, especially as geopolitical tensions and policy unpredictability continue to rise. France’s move signals a wider European trend toward technological self-reliance, as governments look to safeguard data, infrastructure, and autonomy in an increasingly digital world.
